Atlanta Falcons at Green Bay Packers – Week 3
Thursday Night Football
Pick: Green Bay Packers -4.5 (-105)
Sportsbook: BetMGM
Model Forecast: Green Bay 23, Atlanta 17
Projected Total: 40 points
Model Breakdown
There are plenty of reasons for the betting market to be interested in Atlanta this week, but my model continues to make Green Bay the stronger side in this matchup.
The Matchup Scoring Panel gives Green Bay a 40-35 advantage. More importantly, several independent components of the model are clustered around approximately the same Green Bay margin.
- Power Rankings Spread: Green Bay -6.5
- Estimated Power Line: Green Bay -6.5
- Model Average Spread: Green Bay -5.5
- Projected Score: Green Bay 23, Atlanta 17
- Betting Line: Green Bay -4.5
That is the key to the wager. At Green Bay -4.5, the market is giving me approximately two points compared with my -6.5 power rating and one point compared with the model’s -5.5 average spread. The projected six-point margin also clears the -4.5 betting line by 1.5 points.
Why Atlanta Is Getting Market Support
This is not a matchup without warning signs for Green Bay. Atlanta enters Week 3 at 0-2, and historically there have been profitable Week 3 systems involving winless teams and underdogs attempting to avoid an 0-3 start. Green Bay is also playing on a short week after an overtime game.
Those factors help explain why the market moved dramatically from an opening number around Green Bay -7.5. At one point the Packers were available at only -4.5 before the market began moving back toward Green Bay.
I respect those signals, but historical betting trends are supporting information rather than the foundation of this handicap. The matchup itself still has to justify the wager.
The Matchup
Atlanta has advantages in several efficiency categories, particularly in the running game. That makes Green Bay’s ability to control the Falcons’ rushing attack one of the most important elements of the game.
Green Bay’s emerging defense has been excellent against the run early in the season. If the Packers can limit Atlanta’s rushing efficiency, the Falcons may be forced to put considerably more of the offense on the quarterback.
Michael Penix Jr. is returning to the starting lineup following a major knee injury. He has practiced and is available, but this is still a difficult environment for a quarterback returning to game action: Thursday night, on the road, outdoors at Lambeau Field and facing a Green Bay defense that has shown encouraging signs early in the season.
Atlanta is also transitioning from the controlled indoor environment of Mercedes-Benz Stadium to an outdoor natural-grass game at Lambeau. Venue, surface, injuries, scheduling and home-field considerations are incorporated into the Game Context portion of my model.
Why Green Bay -4.5
I considered the possibility of a closer game in the 23-20 range, and the market clearly believes Atlanta can remain competitive. However, I am ultimately going to trust the model rather than rewrite the projection simply because the market moved toward Atlanta.
My major spread indicators are remarkably consistent: Green Bay -6.5, -6.5, -5.5 and a projected six-point victory. When I can buy the Packers at -4.5, I am getting a better number than every one of those primary model estimates.
Official Week 3 Pick
Green Bay Packers -4.5 (-105)
BetMGM
Risk: $105 to win $100
Additional Position:
Green Bay Packers -4.5 at NoVig
Risk: $27
Final Score Projection:
Green Bay Packers 23
Atlanta Falcons 17
The value is tied to the number. Green Bay -4.5 provides meaningful separation from my power line. That advantage becomes smaller at -5.5 and disappears as the market approaches -6.5.
